I’ve been trying to get back into reading lately because I’ve really missed it. The craziness of trying to study full-time and work full-time in the first half of this year plus having my commute cut down dramatically meant that I had zero time to invest in books. I did manage to revisit an old favourite book series of mine whilst I was away and that helped reignite the spark. I didn’t realise how much I had missed reading, and how long it had been since I got into it. So I thought why not add book reviews into my mish-mash of a blog! However, you’re probably going to get sick of photos of my kindle as I stopped buying physical books years ago! But, here we go, my favourite books or series of all time.
The Wheel of Time Series – Robert Jordan
This 14 book series is honestly so addictive. I got so lost in this series that I missed bus/train stops on the regular reading it. It follows the story of a young boy and his friends on a quest as they run from evil (very Lord of the Rings). He meets girls on the way, and there’s lots of magic involved. In this other world there’s a religious element that revolves around the Creator (light) and the Dark One (the ‘devil’). There’s loads of strong characters and it has a lot of subplots. Highly recommend.
Divergent Series – Veronica Roth
I know this series has been getting a lot of press lately, having been made into some pretty decent movies but if you even somewhat enjoyed the movies then you absolutely have to read the books. The books are much more in depth than the movies and the ending is actually quite different. Now I’m not going to give anything away but it’s much less cookie cutter.
The Stephanie Plum Series – Janet Evanovich
A bit of a romantic, light-hearted series but with guns and criminals. What else do you need? Yes, it’s very cheesy, yes there are 23 books plus little “between-the-numbers” novels as well, but that just means it’s really a great holiday series, which are in fact the books I read on my last holiday. My sister got me in to these back when I was in high school and they are a very entertaining read. There’s a love triangle with the protagonist and two very macho males, there’s some hilarious female characters with loads of personality and there’s bounty hunting. I highly recommend as a light read.
The Life Changing Magic of Tidying – Marie Kondo
I have actually semi-reviewed this book here, and I still agree that this did actually completely change my attitude in terms of the ‘stuff’ I own. I think that even if your not interested in de-cluttering it’s still a fantastic read as it really makes you re-think what you spend your money on.
Harry Potter – J.K. Rowling
Do I even need to write anymore? All I have to say is that you will not be able to have a full appreciation of the wizarding world if you’ve only watched the movies. The books are infinitely better than the movies, and the movies are amazing.
The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy – Douglas Adams
Why are so many of my favourite books also movies? Again, this is a fantastic movie but the book is just better. Maybe that’s my personal opinion as someone who loves to read but there’s just so many details that the movies aren’t able to capture in the 1.5hours they have to tell a story. In my opinion these details are what makes a book so great, and this book is hilarious and a little bit quirky. It is quite sci-fi but just give it a go!
I could mention loads of different books that touched me or that intrigued me but I wanted to keep the list short so I kept it to books that I would or have read many, many times. I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve reread some of these books. I hope that I have inspired you to maybe pick up a new series, or book and please share with me your all time favourites!
Thanks for reading!
