We didn’t really spend much time at all on Crete and spent most of our day trip at Spinalonga, an island just off Crete. It has a very interesting history and has been occupied by the Greeks, the Turks and even the Venetians. It gives the architecture on the island some really unique styles. For the early to mid 1900’s Spinalonga was a leper colony. They separated those with leprosy due the belief that it was highly contagious. The lepers had their own fully functioning colony and community there.
The island of Spinalonga makes a beautiful photo, especially with the water. It’s so blue and crystal clear. I recommend a visit there as the history is incredible as well as just how unbelievably beautiful it is.
The next day we visited two islands, Rhodes and Symi. Rhodes is a popular destination for tourists and you can see it in the town. It wasn’t my favourite place of the trip but it was a cool place. There was some really cool bars and restaurants and the vibe was pretty good.
The beach however was beautiful! So busy but so nice. I know a lot of people don’t like them but I love the beach chairs available too! I rarely like the beach, but I did enjoy it this day. We had music, drinks and it was a stunning beach!
I know I keep describing everything as being beautiful but how else can I describe these islands? Just look at these photos of Symi below! The water, the colours! I had so much fun exploring Symi and taking photos. It is just a very pretty island.
After this there’s only one more post left about our Contiki, the last day. I hope you’ve been enjoying my reliving of this trip. Let me know if you’ve been to any of these places! What’s your favourite part of Greece if you’ve been? If you haven’t, where do you want to go?
